Overhead Crane and Hoist Firm Expands to Meet Growing Order Book

With a strong medium term order book, successful hoist product launches completed and a major new product development programme underway, Street Crane Company is expanding its Chapel-en-le-Frith facilities.

New investment, totalling around £750,000, will improve workflow at the factory and expand the production area by around 30 percent. The expansion includes a new reception area for steel plate and improved despatch facilities. Machine shops and the hoist works have also been improved to streamline production while additional design offices have been provided for the development team.

To meet immediate production space needs in the main factory, the company has leased additional warehouse space to relocate its parts storage and some CNC machines. Plans are being prepared for the next development phase, including transfer of hoist production to a new dedicated facility and for new hoist test facilities.

Street Crane expects around 20 new jobs to be created in the expanded factory, of which many will be design engineers to support the intensive hoist development programme.

Commenting on the expansion, managing director Andrew Pimblett said, “Lean production has been a way of life at Street Crane for many years. From a constrained site we have been able to produce up to 400 cranes per year and over 2000 hoists. The new facilities will permit better workflow and boost productivity at a time when we are experiencing exceptional levels of interest worldwide in our factory cranes, hoists and crane components.”

Street Crane Company is the UK’s largest independent crane producer. The company design and manufacture electric overhead travelling cranes (EOTC’s) of up to 200 tonnes safe working load (SWL). These may be configured as gantry cranes and Goliath or semi-Goliath cranes, with single, double or box girder construction.

Street Crane customers include the full manufacturing spectrum from metal producers, through all branches of structural and mechanical engineering to aerospace and automotive. The company offers both standard cranes and specially engineered cranes for unusual applications such as coil and glass handling.

Internationally, the company has expanded by supplying crane sub-systems such as carriages, controls and hoists to other national and regional crane producers. Street Crane’s ZX6-8 hoist range, launched in early 2008 was specifically developed for the international market. The hoist has modular construction, parts are interchangeable and it is easily customised to meet different lifting and handling needs and international standards.
