UK Speed Probes for Trains and Trams to Enter Chinese Rail Market

To gain access to the vast Chinese railway market, Rowe Hankins has concluded a licensing agreement with Nanche Electric Equipment Company of Changsha in Hunan province. The agreement is for the manufacture under licence of their Hall-effect speed probes in China for the local market. The deal will be mutually beneficial, with Rowe Hankins supplying parts in kit form from the UK for assembly by Nanche.

Development and modernisation of the Chinese railway system is proceeding at a rapid pace with investment of two trillion Yuan (292 billion US dollars) planned between 2004 and 2020. Most of this is in high speed inter city rail and urban metros.

Rowe Hankins export manager Tim Allard explained, “The major rail engineering companies that we work with in the rest of the world have already set-up manufacturing operations in China. They naturally want to use proven and familiar rail safety technologies such as Rowe Hankins speed probes. By working with Nanche we can meet these needs competitively and ensure that our products have full local engineering support.”

Founded in 2002, Nanche Electric has grown rapidly reflecting the country’s substantial investment in railway infrastructure. The company already manufactures and supplies primary condition sensors for speed, voltage, current, power and pressure as well as integration devices to convert primary data to instrumentation outputs. However, the company do not currently produce a western specification Hall-effect speed probe.

Mr Jiantao Peng, vice general manger, and Mr Shiyong Liu from Nanche visited Rowe Hankins for initial technical discussions. A further executive visit is planned for later in the year when it is expected that representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Railways will also visit the Bury factory.
